Creating a Win-Win Arrangement

Johns Hopkins endorses the adoption of flexible work arrangements for employees if they are appropriate for the position, person, environment, and work situation, and meet business needs and objectives. A flexible work arrangement (FWA) is any one of a spectrum of work structures that alters the time and/or place that work gets done on a regular basis. The term includes (but is not limited to) flexibility in the scheduling of hours worked, flexibility in the amount of hours worked, and flexibility in the place of work, such as working at home or at a satellite location. A flexible work arrangement is not an entitlement or reward, a secret arrangement, or for every employee or every job.

Benefits of a flexible work arrangement

Though flexible work arrangements do not work for all employees or all types of jobs, when planned and implemented appropriately, flexible work arrangements can be a win-win situation for both departments and employees. Studies show that work schedule flexibility can yield many benefits including increased productivity, improved morale, decreased absenteeism and turnover, and improved quality of work.

You may submit a flexible work arrangement proposal to your supervisor for consideration, and conversely, your supervisor may assign a position to an alternate or flexible work arrangement to meet work requirements. Once adopted, a flexible work arrangement may be revised or ended in the same way that other work schedule modifications would be made for the position.

Resources available

We offer flexible work arrangement resources for both employees and managers. The cornerstone of these resources is an online module for managers. Employees and managers are strongly encouraged to take their respective courses before submitting or reviewing a flexible work arrangement proposal.
