Leave of Absence
As you approach the arrival date of your new family member, you will consider how much paid and unpaid leave you would like to take. Family and Medical Leave (FML) entitles eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave.
In addition to FML, university faculty, staff or bargaining unit members who have been continuously employed in a full-time or part-time position for at least one year, are eligible for Birth Recovery and Parental Leave (new policy as of July 1, 2017).
Birth Recovery Leave
This leave provides the parent who gives birth with six weeks of paid leave immediately after giving birth. The leave may be extended if medically necessary.
This leave provides four weeks of leave for all births and adoptions that occurred on or after June 1, 2017. The time may be taken in full-day consecutive blocks of time or intermittently in full-day increments beginning on or after July 1, 2017 through the 12 months from the birth or placement of your child.
If you have elected Short-Term Disability, this benefit may be of use to help replace a portion of your paycheck during this life transition. Benefits begin after the 14th consecutive day of illness and continue for up to 11 weeks provided you remain disabled and unable to work. The plan will pay 60% of your weekly base earnings, not to exceed $1,000 per week, for an eligible absence. You may elect or drop your coverage during annual enrollment.
