Healthy living or self-care refers to a combination of behaviors, attitudes, and interactions that promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being and allow you to maximize your ability to function well at work and outside of work. Healthy living encompasses:

  • Proper nutrition
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Exercise
  • Regular doctor’s visits
  • Setting limits for yourself
  • Making time for the people and things you enjoy
  • Maintaining practices that engage your sense of spirituality, however you define it


How does it impact the workplace?

Healthy living can impact occupational functioning in many ways, directly and indirectly. It fosters a collegial, supportive environment in which co-workers are able to collaborate and everyone is energized and motivated to work toward goals, both individual and shared.


How does it impact relationships?

We have many conflicting demands, goals, and obligations. Maintaining social connections, while crucial to self-care, can often be considered expendable when you are trying to establish priorities. However, the stress relief and mood boost provided through social relationships often outweigh the cost to time and productivity.


How does it impact academics?

In the same way that healthy living is related to occupational functioning, it is positively correlated to academic functioning. The most obvious ways include missing class due to fatigue or illness or finding it difficult to make up work that has been missed. However, poor self-care can also have an impact on psychological variables, such as motivation, concentration, and memory.
