Clinical Services

At times, life can be stressful. Managing work and a personal or family life often leads to unwanted worry. Concerns about emotional well-being, mental health, medical illness, or financial hardships can keep you from being the person that you'd like to be.

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FASAP) is here to help. Compassionate and understanding clinicians are available to meet with you to lend an ear or to help you identify more effective coping skills. Our staff is made up of experienced clinical psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed clinical professional counselors. All services are free and completely confidential and are considered a benefit provided to Johns Hopkins employees.

What are some of the reasons that employees seek out our services?

  • Feeling down, overwhelmed, and tired

FASAP services include:

  • Assessment of current concerns
  • Brief, supportive counseling
  • Referral to appropriate community services and resources
  • Consultations about concerned colleagues
  • Consultations with management
  • Financial Assistance Program (FAP)
  • Immediate support and emotional management of crisis situations
  • Risk Assessment for workplace violence and safety
  • Training, education, and outreach

You are eligible for an assessment and short-term assistance for managing challenges in your life. If longer-term assistance is appropriate, you may be referred to outside resources for additional support. This can be through a health plan or community resources. Outside resources may charge fees for their services.

FASAP services are offered at the following locations: East Baltimore, Johns Hopkins at Eastern High School, Bayview, Columbia and Rockville, MD, and in Washington, D.C.


Confidentiality is the cornerstone of FASAP. We understand that certain issues are extremely personal, and our clinicians treat any and all information disclosed in a session with the utmost sensitivity. In fact, no one will know that you are receiving services at FASAP unless you disclose that information yourself or sign a release giving your clinician permission to disclose the information. It is important to note that there are a few important exceptions to confidentiality (e.g., harm to yourself, others, or the institution and child or elder abuse when the perpetrator has been identified), and your clinician will discuss these during your first session.

Sometimes our clients ask whether or not FASAP records can be accessed by a supervisor or other institutional employees. You can rest assured that FASAP records are kept separately from all other JHU or JHMI records. Our files cannot be accessed or released without your expressed written permission or a court order. If you have additional concerns, please feel free to bring these up with your FASAP clinician.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your first appointment in order to fill out paperwork regarding confidentiality, privacy policies, and demographic information and provide information about the reason for your visit.
  • Next, you will meet with your individual clinician to talk about your current concerns.
  • The clinician will gather additional information to better understand the current issues.
  • You and your clinician will make a plan with next steps to move forward.
  • The first appointment typically takes 90 - 120 minutes.
  • You will receive the opportunity to complete a client satisfaction survey at the end of your first session.

After hours and on the weekends, masters-level professionals are on call.
