Johns hopkins University tops its goal

With donations still coming in, $560,423 has been pledged to the university's campaign - exceeding the goal of $505,550 by nearly $55,000. The campaign featured several successful fundraising events, including Homewood Student Affairs' Bingo, which raised more than $3,000, and the School of Arts and Sciences' Block Party, which raised $1,166.

Several of the university's designated units far exceeded their goals and had record participation.  Homewood Student Affairs surpassed its goal by $4,596.  The Carey Business School had the highest rate of participation with nearly 57% of its 143 employees making a pledge. The Office of Government and Community Relations had the second-highest rate of participation with 48% of its employees making a pledge.

More than $270,000 was pledged to the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund, which was an increase of more than $10,000 compared to funds pledged in 2010.  The Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund supports agencies that serve communities in close proximity to Johns Hopkins campuses and have a strong relationship with the university employees.

Campaign Chair Jerry Schnydman expressed appreciation for a “wonderful team of volunteers.”

Johns Hopkins University United Way Campaign

A message from President Ron Daniels and Campaign Chair Jerry Schnydman

Consider this – each day there are members of our community who must decide between keeping a job and caring for a child, between suffering abuse and being homeless, between paying a mortgage and getting essential health care. These are our families, our friends, our neighbors and our co-workers.  Now, more than ever, our communities need your help. By giving to United Way, we make a real difference in the lives of those in need.

For 85 years, United Way of Central Maryland has been a partner in addressing health and human service needs across the region. Their mission is to mobilize the community to improve people’s lives. Through the annual Johns Hopkins United Way campaign, individuals like you contribute to this crucial effort.

Despite tough economic times, the Johns Hopkins Institutions raised almost $2.2 million last year. We designated over $220,000 for the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund, where we can see the fruits of our efforts in the neighborhoods where we work. This past year it provided funding for counseling and mentoring to reduce repeat juvenile offenders, employment readiness through Certified Geriatric Nursing Assistant skills training, and numerous literacy programs, to cite just a small portion of what your generosity provided.

The need for your help is stronger than ever. We hope you will join us in supporting United Way. Please give help for today and hope for tomorrow.
